10 Tips for Outdoor Photography – Ram Chary

January 20, 2022 by Carter Leave a Comment

Outdoor photography is a popular genre for many photographers. It is immensely fun to capture nature and its subjects in an interesting pose or action, especially during the dawn and sunset hours. However, just having a good camera does not guarantee wonderful shots each time you click. To get good outdoor photographs, one needs to have certain fundamental skills to capture a photograph. To help you out, we have listed here the ten outdoor photography tips that experts like Ram Chary say will make your photographs interesting and memorable.

1) Slow down

You might want to race through the frame when photographing an outdoor subject, but remember, you lose more in not clicking than in clicking many photographs. So slow down, take your time, and try to get the best possible picture.

2) Watch your background

While clicking outdoor photographs, you will find that one of your main problems is your background. Your subject can look terrible in an otherwise beautiful frame simply because you failed to pay attention to the background. So plan well in advance where you want your subject’s placement, take note of existing objects or other people in the frame and place them carefully so that they do not affect the overall beauty in any way.

3) Look for different perspectives

If photographing flowers makes you feel like you are in a lab, experiment with your lenses. Get down on the ground to see if you can get an interesting angle for your flower shot. If you are photographing mountains, lie flat and try to capture them from below. Try to take shots that would normally be considered impossible or difficult during regular photography. You will find that it is often just small changes that make big differences in your photographs.

4) Avoid the sun

This may sound like an obvious bit of advice, but photographers forget this point sometimes when carrying out their outdoor photography sessions. When you shoot towards the sun, apart from making your subjects dark and silhouetted, there is another problem; you cannot control the light. The harsh sunlight can ruin even the best frame by creating dark shadows. So, always try to shoot with the sun behind you or at your side.

5) Discover new locations

If you are photographing outdoors regularly, then chances are that you have already visited almost all your favorite spots in your city. If you want to get good pictures of outdoor subjects, then find out new places to capture appealing shots. Explore different areas and discover some wonderful locales that no photographer has ever shot before.

6) Get eye contact with animals

Eye contact is one thing that will bring life into your still frame of an animal. If you see an animal in front of you, always try to get its eyes sharp and clear in one shot. Capture multiple angles but avoid clicking pictures when the animal is not looking at your camera or has its eyes closed or half shut.

7) Try different perspectives

While photographing, birds, for example, stand under trees so that they don’t fly away. Shoot from different heights to capture them flying around you or perched on branches. Go near water bodies and try to capture them as they fly away from the water’s edge or approaching you, landing on a branch. Cross a small patch of grassland and wait for birds that come out to eat insects.
