How to refinish hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors are known to last for a long time. But it may undergo wear and tear due to daily use. Hence, this is the reason it requires refinishing. Hardwood flooring Toronto suggest you ways to do it. You can use rented machines for sanding the wood floors. You can even add a protective wood finish.

So here are some ways to refinish the hardwood floors;

 

1. You can remove Shoe base molding:-

-There is a shoe bade like a piece of quarter-round molding attached. It is placed where the floor meets the wall. You need to remove it. This is because it can prevent floor sander from banging against it.

-pull it out using a pry bar

-Label each piece when the floor refinishing is complete.

-In the case of no shoe base molding, you can remove the base molding.

2.Repair the squeaks and uplift the floor

-Find out nail loose floorboards and squeaks.

-To nail into a floor useful tool to apply is joist. It is the best option. Use 8d finishing nails.

-You need to find protruding nails. For this slide the blade of a putty knife across the floor.

3. Use drum sander

-Start with 36- or 40-grit sandpaper and then switch to 60-grit.

-Lastly follow with 80- and finally 100-grit. Don’t jump to a finer grit.

4. Cleaning up the flooring

-This process is to remove any debris left by the sandpaper that can scratch the results of the finer-grit paper.

5. Use an edger to sand the edges and corners.

-Apply technique on scrap wood first as an edger can be a bit difficult to control.

-As with the drum sander, start with coarse-grit paper and later move to finer grades.

-First, use the edger using the same grade to keep the entire floor uniform, each time you’re ready to change grades of on the drum sander,

-If there are very small areas of flooring that the edger cannot reach, remove the old surface with a scraper and some 80- and 100-grit paper by hand to remove the old finish.

6. Level down the unevenness using floor buffer.

7. Before applying floor finish remove the dust.

8. Use a foam applicator pad to apply the stain. Remove the excess.

9. Let the stain dry and later add the wood finish.
