What Type of Education Do You Need to Be an Interior Designer?

July 26, 2019 by Carter Leave a Comment

So, out of all the careers out there today, you took an online learning self-assessment and decided to start your career in interior design. You made a smart choice.

Interior designers take their expertise to make people’s homes and offices more appealing to the eye. If you’re considering making interior design your field of work, then you need to know a little about it beforehand. Read on below for a few things you should know, such as salary outlook and required education.

Wages and outlook

It is estimated that employment for interior designers will do nothing but increase in the coming years, with average salaries hovering around $51,000 annually. That, of course, is determined by the state you’re living in when you become an interior designer as well. It’s said to be a good career to get into if you apply yourself, get a good education in the field, and have a great eye for detail.

Recommended (and required) education

In the year 2008 alone, there were over 72,000 interiors designers working in that field, and that number has grown and is expected to continue growing. It takes anywhere from two to four years to become an interior designer. You can find the courses needed at most design schools, colleges, and universities.

Check the schools in your area to see if they have what you need or in many cases you can study online or a combination of the two. You can usually earn an associate degree or a certificate in interior design by attending a two to three year program. But many students go on for their bachelors, which is a four-year program and, of course, earns you more money as well.

Apprentice programs

Once you have graduated with either your associate degree or your bachelors degree, most students try to get into an apprentice program to study under a master before they head out on their own. Studying under a master for awhile will prepare you to get out in the real world and get a job as an experienced interior.

Other necessities

Most states require that interior designers be licenced, registered, or certified to work in their state. You need to check into the requirements for the state that you hope to work in, as each state has different laws on the matter.

The college, design school, or university you apply to should be able to tell you everything you need to know about the requirements for your particular state. It is possible that continuing education classes will be required in order to keep up your licence as well.

Opportunities for advancement

There are always opportunities for advancement when you choose a career in interior design. As you gain more experience, it’s possible to move into better position at large firms, or even to open your own design business and branch out on your own. For a well-trained designer with a head for business and a great eye for home design inspiration, the possibilities are endless.

These are just a few of the things you need to know when you decide to study in the field of interior design. Remember, with some natural talent, the right education, and the right experience, the interior design field might just be the best choice of career for you. Check your local colleges to see what course they offer, and get started today.
