5 Tips for Making a Career Change

December 15, 2020 by Carter Leave a Comment

The prospect of a career change can be a scary thought for some people. You’ve spent your whole life training, studying, and preparing for one particular role, and now you’ve decided you want to do something completely different. It can easily feel like you’re starting from scratch, and, in some cases, you might be if you have to learn a new qualification or undergo training.

Nevertheless, a career change is never impossible, and you should always be able to strive for the career you want, and that makes you happy, no matter what stage of your life you’re at.

With this in mind, here are five tips for making a successful career change:

  • Set Time Aside

It can be a very stressful endeavor if you’re attempting to make a career switch whilst working full-time anyway. You don’t want to risk increasing stress and anxiety by working in a busy job and then spending all your spare time looking for a new one.

Setting time aside for proper career planning is a good idea. You may want to book a few days off to have time to sit down and dedicate to your plan, or you may even want to take a week or two off to fully immerse yourself in your new venture.

This will also help you to be more focused on your new task, rather than trying to cram it in around your already full working schedule.

  • Save Some Back-Up Finances

You never know what’s going to happen when it comes to a career change. You may even need to suddenly take a significant dip in your wages in order to try out a new role. It’s therefore a good idea to have some savings and an emergency fund to fall back on so that you know your finances can still be taken care of while you try your new career venture.

Make a budget and be certain you understand all your outgoings so that you can save more, and also know what your minimum wage needs to be.

  • Look for Accelerated Learning Opportunities

If you’re faced with the necessity of learning a new qualification in order to progress in a new career role, there are ways you can make the process easier and quicker. Time might be a key factor if you’re making a career switch, as you may want to get on with it as quickly as possible and begin enjoying your new career adventure.

That’s why it’s always worth looking for accelerated learning opportunities. These programs are designed to allow you to make a switch from another qualification as quickly as possible through intensive study, as shown through this Bachelor of Nursing opportunity.

  • Evaluate the Reasons Why You Need a Change

This is essential so that you don’t end up making any mistakes or finding the same jobs which no longer bring you fulfillment. Sitting down to write notes about all the things you don’t like about your current position or why you’re looking to make a switch will help you to find a job that ensures you won’t encounter the same problems again.

This could be anything, no matter how big or small, from the working hours, the working environment, to the job itself.

There may also be more personal reasons which come into play, such as changes in yourself as a person, changes in your lifestyle, or changes which need to be made in the future. It may even be as simple as needing a higher wage.

  • Speak to Those Within Your Desired Career

If you’ve honed in on a particular career you’re interested in, then it’s always a good idea to get feedback from those who have either worked in that career in the past or work within it now. There’s a lot that can be gleaned from other people who have first-hand experience, and it might be the sort of information you can’t find online or in official job descriptions.

Seek out opportunities to speak with others, which could be through social media, online forums, networking opportunities, or you might even know somebody who can direct you regarding the career you’re searching for.

In Summary

A career switch is always possible, so don’t let the challenges of making a change later in life put you off. Take time out to get to know yourself, your passions, and your career goals. Do your research before you commit to any job and ensure you choose a path that works best for you.
