One of the most common side-hustles which people are doing at the moment is content writing and there is just as big a need for content as there are writers. It is however important that you have a great understanding of what good content looks like, in order to ensure you have clients who keep coming back to you. I was introduced to the world of content writing by the brilliant Bharat Bhise, an online guru and someone who has really helped me out in so many ways in terms of online business. Bharat was the one who spoke to me about what great content looked like and that is something which I wanted to pass on to any of you out there who are looking to create online content.
Research
As a content writer you could be writing about any number of subjects from finance to travel, law to health, and the key to grasping what it is you are discussing is in the research phase. You have to give sufficient time to the researching of the subject that you are writing about because the information which you put in the content must be factual and must be relevant. In some cases this can be hard which is why you should always ensure that you have allotted sufficient time to this.
Checking and Editing
A trap that many fall into, especially if they are writing about a topic which they understand well, is that they will not go through an editing process or sufficiently check the content that they are putting together. Editing is vital because it is only once you have walked away from something and gone back to it that you are able to really see the piece for what it is, and make changes to improve the way in which it sounds. Don’t ever deliver work which hasn’t been triple-checked or edited.
Creative
Because of the fact that there are so many great writers out there it is vitally important that you re able to truly express yourself and bring some creativity to proceedings in order for clients to call the work which you do. If you are monotone and basic in your writing then it won’t matter that you have met the client’s guidelines, as they are not going to be blown away by what you have done. Dig deep and get creative when you are delivering content.
Timely
One you get a client or a number of clients it is absolutely essential that you do all that you can to hang on to them and keep them happy. This is why it is always important that you deliver work way ahead of the deadline. If you are given a week to do a day’s worth of writing then don’t deliver it late, there really is little excuse for doing that. Some things may come up that are unavoidable, and that is just life, if this happens then be open and honest with your client, other than that, don’t be late.
