Does Insulation Make Homes Overheat in Summer? And other FAQs

June 21, 2023 by Carter Leave a Comment

Insulation is the perfect solution for keeping your home warm. But, as the weather gets warmer, many of us start to worry about our homes becoming too hot. After all, nobody wants to feel uncomfortable in their home. But is insulation really to blame for making homes too hot in summer?

In this guide, we will answer some of the most frequently asked questions loft insulation installers are asked about insulation and overheating. We will also dispel some of the myths about insulation so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not it is right for your home.

What is home insulation?

Insulation is when a material is used in a building to reduce the flow of thermal energy in your home, reducing your heating and cooling costs. Insulating your home not only reduces costs but also improves your comfort. It can also help keep homes energy efficient.

Insulation typically consists of fibres, foams, fabrics, and other materials that are designed to trap air and reduce the transfer of heat or cold. Common insulation types include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and internal and external wall insulation.

Is insulation making my home hot in summer?

Insulation is well recognised for conserving heat and keeping our homes warm during colder months. However, it is also common knowledge that insulation can keep our homes cool during summer. This is because insulation prevents heat from escaping which also means it blocks heat from entering. So, on a hot summer day when it’s hot outside, insulation prevents that heat from entering your home.

Your home will be cooler and lose less heat through the walls in summer when you add insulation. However, there are some things that can make your home heat up in summer when you have insulation.

Windows are making your home hotter

Until it encounters a solid, transparent object, radiation transmits heat as electromagnetic waves. The sun’s rays pass directly through your windows and heat up your house’s walls and floor as they do. Solar gain is what causes your conservatory to heat up in the summer while your loft remains cool.

So, the truth is, windows and glazing are one of the biggest issues causing our homes to overheat. Electrical appliances are another overlooked factor that is heating up your home during summer.

Insulation keeps your home cool

Your home’s insulation can help create a thermal barrier that significantly delays the movement of heat out of a room. The opposite occurs in the summer; since hot air from outside can’t enter the house as easily, not as much energy is required to keep your home cool.

As a result, cavity wall insulation can significantly lower your energy costs both in the summer and the winter. It is definitely worth investing in given that the procedure is quick and affordable.

We hope this blog has answered your question: “Does Insulation Make Homes Overheat in Summer”.
