5 Tips for Caring for an Elderly Loved One With Mobility Challenges

August 10, 2021 by Carter Leave a Comment

Aging is an inevitable process and if you have relatives or parents in their sunset years, the best you can do is ensure they get the best possible care. Owing to the many changes that come with age, senior individuals are more prone to a diverse range of health challenges.

As one grows older, the spine tends to weaken, and joints and muscles also become less flexible, leading to mobility problems in most elderly individuals. If coupled with certain mental and physical illnesses, your aging loved one may sometimes not be able to walk on their own, and they may require an extra level of care and specialized treatment. Here are five tips that can benefit you when caring for a senior relative with mobility challenges.

1. Reduce Clutter in Their Home

Older individuals are always at a higher risk of trips, slips or falls. A simple fall in the hallway or living room could cause major bone or head injuries. Some of these tripping falls can be fatal to the elderly, so they should be prevented. Despite the weight of their mobility issues, one of the ways you can ensure great care and safety to your aging loved one is minimizing clutter and obstructions from their living space.

2. Install Ramps and Grab Bars

Older adults may find it difficult to climb the stairs, especially when they have health issues. The good thing is that you can repurpose your home or theirs to help them age in place. For instance, installing ramps where necessary can help make their life easier. Also, ensure the ramps have grab bars and have some installed in places like the bathroom to ease movement.

3. Get a Hoist and Stairlift

Caring for an older adult can be extremely cumbersome, especially if you have to lift them physically up the stairs. However, with a home stair lift or hoist system installed, your elderly loved one doesn’t have to feel indebted to you each time you help them up. They also won’t get stranded when they want to go upstairs and you’re not around to offer support.

4. Get Them an Advanced Wheelchair

The wheelchair is perhaps one of the greatest inventions for people with physical disabilities. Today’s models are highly advanced to make life easier for those suffering mobility challenges. From active to electric wheelchairs and portable scooters, they come in all shapes, sizes, and designs for different uses. An off-road mobility scooter can help your elderly maneuver the outdoors easily. You just have to choose one depending on the needs of your senior relative.

5. Help Them Get Active and Stay Healthy

Don’t forget to ensure your elderly loved one stays physically active despite their mobility challenges. Always ensure they keep up with their regular health checks and treatment plans. While you’re at it, you can also talk to the doctor about safe senior exercises they can engage in.

Taking care of an elderly loved one can be overwhelming, especially if they suffer from mobility challenges. With the few tips above in mind, however, the job gets easier and more enjoyable.
