A Comprehensive Look into Women’s Reproductive Health

December 11, 2019 by Carter Leave a Comment

The health of women encompasses many health issues ranging from infertility, pregnancy, reproductive health, menopause, pelvic examinations and visits to the OB/GYN. The main healthcare that is unique to only women is mainly focused on their reproductive health. The demand for better quality and personalized reproductive health services has led to the increase in the number of health facilities specializing in menopause consultation, contraception, STD/STI, fertility and infertility testing in Winter Park, FL. The team at Contemporary Women’s Care, a Winter Park OB/GYN, is qualified and skilled to competently handle the various issues encompassed in the reproductive health of women.

Defining an OBGYN

An obstetrician-gynecologist, commonly referred to as an OB/GYN is a physician whose expertise is in the health of women. There are numerous biological changes that are experienced by females in the bodies during their lifecycles such as menopause, menstruation, childbirth, ovulation, and infertility. The OBGYN is competently equipped to treat and provide medical services to females undergoing one or several of these biological processes. If you are in need of any screening or medical care that is associated with the reproductive system then you should consult an OBGYN. These health specialists specialize in gynecology and obstetrics.

What is obstetrics?

This is a branch in health that deals with all aspects of childbirth as well as surgical and medical care. This branch is concerned with the wellbeing of the mother throughout the pregnancy period and after delivery. Obstetrics encompasses processes like pregnancy, labor, childbirth and postpartum care. Obstetricians can operate alone or they can work jointly with other physicians in the health facility.

What is gynecology?

The branch of medical science that deals with the reproductive health and body of women is known as gynecology. Gynecology involves activities such as diagnosing, treating and providing medical care to the reproductive system of women. The reproductive system of women consists of parts such as the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tube, cervix and vulva. The screening of breast using the mammography test and providing treatment for their related illnesses is also included in gynecology. Gynecology is involved in the life of females as they evolve from adolescent, puberty, teenage years and finally as they transition to adulthood.

Conditions treated and procedures used by OBGYNs

OBGYNs have the relevant skillset to diagnose, treat and examine a variety of reproductive health diseases. The purpose of visiting an OBGYN varies depending on your age, reproductive goal or health status. You can consult an OBGYN if you experience abnormal bleeding, pain in the pelvic area, itching in the vagina or vulva, hormonal imbalances or disorders, endometriosis, vaginal infections, urinary incontinence, infertility and breast abnormalities. Depending on the severity and nature of your illness the OBGYN will recommend the most suitable treatment plan. The OBGYN can use minor or major surgical procedures to treat your reproductive health diseases as an outpatient or an inpatient. Some of the common procedures conducted by OBGYNs include biopsies, laser surgery, curettage and dilation, tubal litigation, fibroids removal through myomectomy and hysterectomy. If the OBGYN is assisting you during prenatal, delivery or postpartum they can use procedures like cesarean to deliver the baby, vaginal delivery, vacuum and forceps delivery, amniocentesis and in vitro fertilization. The other regular screening and examination processes related to reproductive health like pelvic examination, pap smear, etc. can also be carried out by OBGYNs.
