Diabetes, Its Types and Ways To Manage It

Diabetes is not a new common name in the field of medicine. Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect the glucose consumption ways of the body. Glucose is a very important part of the human body as it is one of the most important sources of energy for the cells that mainly constitute tissue and muscles. Even the working of our brain depends on glucose.

Diabetes tends to lead to a buildup of sugars in the body, thus increasing the risk of dangerous diseases like stroke and heart disease. For some, diabetes persists from childhood, and for some, it is the result of gaining too much weight or having an inactive lifestyle.

TYPES OF DIABETES

Three major types of diabetes that can develop in the human body include Type1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes: This type of diabetes condition occurs when the body fails to produce insulin. The patients tend to depend on insulin and need to intake artificial insulin daily to maintain blood sugar levels. It is often known as Juvenile Diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes: This type of diabetes affects the way the body uses insulin. The body in Type 2 diabetes although continues to make insulin; the cells in the body fail to respond as the used to do as effectively as before. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and persists in most patients suffering from diabetic conditions.

Gestational Diabetes: This type of diabetes occurs in women during their pregnancy when their body tends to become less sensitive to insulin. It is important to note that the conditions of Gestational Diabetes do not occur in every woman and if occurs is generally resolved after giving birth to the child.

SYMPTOMS
The main signs and symptoms of Diabetes are listed below:

  • Increased Thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred Vision
  • Slow healing sores
  • Frequent infections
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Itching Skin
  • Dehydration and hunger
  • Increased susceptibility of infections

RISK FACTORS

Risk Factors for Type 1 Diabetes are listed below:

  • Family History, If someone’s parent or sibling has Type 1 diabetes
  • Environmental Factors, Certain circumstances like exposure to a viral illness can contribute to the occurrence of Type 1 diabetes.
  • Autoantibodies, The family members of one suffering with Type 1 diabetes are often tested to have the presence of diabetes autoantibodies. Thus, the chances of Type 1 diabetes increases.

Risk Factors for prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes are listed below:

  • Weight, The more the fatty tissue in one’s body, the more cells tend to be resistant to insulin.
  • Inactivity, Lesser the activeness, more is the risk. Physical Activity helps in consuming up glucose energy and thus making cells more sensitive to insulin.
  • Family History, If someone’s parent or sibling has Type 2 diabetes
  • Age, the risk of Type 2 diabetes increases as one gets older; this may be because we exercise less and gain weight with time and age.
  • High Blood Pressure, Having high blood pressure conditions is believed to be linked with the increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Good Cholesterol Levels, if you have a good cholesterol level, your risk of developing a type 2 diabetes increases.

PREVENTION

Type 1 Diabetes can never be truly prevented. But some healthy lifestyle choices can help you in treating prediabetes, type 2, and gestational diabetes. These can also help in Type 1 diabetes.

  • Healthy and Balanced Diet.
  • Increased Physical Activity
  • Losing Weight

MEDICATION

Several medicines are present in the market that can help in maintain blood sugar levels. Though it is not possible to cure Diabetes completely, proper medication can help maintain insulin levels in the body. From artificial insulation to toujeo, effective medication methods are present that can help in maintaining the symptoms of Diabetes and control them to a possible extent.

Toujeo is a type of medicine used to treat both Type1 and Type 2 diabetes which contains insulin glargine, a form which is considered to be long-acting insulin.

Diabetes may not have a permanent cure but can be a trigger to several more diseases. Thus, a diabetic patient needs to control and maintain the sugar levels to the possible extents.
