How to Stay Healthy as You Go Through the Aging Process

December 20, 2019 by Carter Leave a Comment

As a young adult, it’s unusual to suffer from a significant disease. However, as you progress into middle age and then your senior years, ailments become more common. Whilst you cannot avoid developing some illness which may be hereditary, there are actions you can take that can ward off illnesses or reduce their likelihood.

Here are some suggestions for how to stay healthy as you age.

Intentionally Maintain Flexibility

When not exercising and varying up your daily movement, your body tends to seize up. The old aches and pains begin to show up. Moving around becomes harder. Eventually, just getting up from the sofa can cause back or knee issues for you when being too sedentary for too long.

It may seem counterintuitive but becoming more flexible requires that you to go through the pain barrier a little bit. That’s because in order to develop a better fitness level, you must exert yourself. For the first few days, your muscles will be sore when doing so. However, once through this stage, it gets much easier from there.

Before doing any exercise, it’s important to stretch first. If you wish to have greater flexibility, then consider yoga. It’s progressive and challenging, but builds strength across your body while being a zero impact exercise.

Avoiding Muscle Loss When Over Fifty

A loss of muscle mass when hitting the half century mark is something that up to ten percent of the population suffers from. Medically, this is referred to as Sarcopenia.

Unlike in the younger years when the natural growth from childhood to adulthood leads to a certain amount of muscle on the body, this doesn’t always stay consistent when in middle age. With Sarcopenia, the skeletal muscle system is significantly affected over time.

To address these concerns, taking a protein supplement like UltraMeal Advance is an excellent way to get vital protein through an advanced formula, leucine to help the skeletal muscle system, and branched-chain amino acids to promote the building of new muscle mass.

It’s also been found with research that weight training encourages the body to breakdown the existing muscle and recreate it larger and stronger. The ingredients in a quality protein supplement assist in this endeavor to replace lost muscle mass and regain strength.

Keep Mentally Active

The human brain doesn’t deal with inactivity well. Especially as you age, it’s important to keep mentally busy even if you experience in a lull in your working career or have retired with little to occupy your days now.

It’s important to get cognitive stimulation every day. Committing to continuous learning is one way to do that and if you enjoy becoming more knowledgeable, then all the better. Reading books on topics that fascinate you, studying and playing chess at a higher level, or learning a new language ahead of a planned trip are all activities that will extend your capabilities while keeping you mentally agile.

By staying involved in your life, growing intellectually and being physically active, there’s less chance of developing an illness. And you’re far less likely to get bored that way too.
