What Causes Dry Eye?

July 19, 2022 by Carter Leave a Comment

Dry eye occurs when the tears in your eyes are not sufficient to keep them moist or tears are not working the way they are supposed to. If you have dry eye syndrome, it can make you uncomfortable, and it may even result in vision issues.

Dry eye syndrome is not uncommon and may also be a chronic issue for many older people. Tears are there to lubricate the eyes, keep them from getting infected, and ensure that your eye’s surface stays clear and moist. Tears also protect your eyes from foreign particles, washing them away and ensuring they are rid of irritants that cause discomfort and other eye problems.

If you have dry eyes, there is a higher risk of developing infections. Moreover, eye inflammation can occur, your corneal surface may get damaged, and corneal ulcers may develop. Ultimately, without proper treatment, it may result in loss of vision.

Dry eye causes

There are several causes of dry eye to develop. One of the primary reasons is the age factor. As people age, it is common to experience dry eyes. Generally, people over 65 years will start experiencing these symptoms. A woman is more prone to developing dry eyes because of several factors such as hormonal changes from pregnancy, menopause, and oral contraceptives. Another cause of dry eyes is medical issues like diabetes and arthritis. The medications you take for specific health conditions can also result in dry eyes. Some of these medications include anti-depressants, antihistamines, hypertension medications, etc. If you constantly wear contact lenses, there is also a risk of developing dry eyes. Eyelid problems like ectropion, where eyelids are turned outward, and entropion, where they are turned inward, can also cause dry eye syndrome. Fortunately, you can get Dry Eye relief treatments and products from trusted suppliers to help you effectively manage your dry eye issues.

Dry eye symptoms

Several symptoms manifest if you have dry eye syndrome. You may start experiencing a stinging sensation in your eyes and are more sensitive to light. You may also notice a slimy substance developing around or inside your eyes. Redness and a feeling of something foreign inside your eyes are other symptoms of dry eyes. Additionally, your vision may be blurry, and your eyes can feel tired. These are common symptoms that alert you of dry eye syndrome.

Prevention

If you are experiencing dry eye syndrome, it is best to understand the underlying causes to know how to alleviate the symptoms. Your indoor air may be causing the problem, so it would help to have a humidifier to maintain moisture inside your home or workplace. Avoid staring at your computer screen for long periods, blinking often, and allowing your eyes to rest regularly. Sunglasses and other protective types of eyewear can help protect your eyes. Smoking significantly contributes to dry eyes, so it is best to quit the habit altogether. Also, avoid smoky areas to keep your eyes from irritating smoke. You can also use artificial tears to add moisture to your eyes and reduce discomfort.

While dry eyes is common, it is best to take the necessary steps to prevent symptoms from worsening to enjoy clear, healthy eyes.
