What Does Menopause in Women Entail?

December 11, 2019 by Carter Leave a Comment

Menopause is an important stage in the life of an individual that is characterized by symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. If you suspect that you are approaching menopause, there are several ideal places you can treat your menopause symptoms and enhance your health. If you reside in San Antonio, menopause should not distract your normal routines as the symptoms can be easily treated.

When Does Menopause Occur?

Menopause is the duration in a woman’s life cycle when the monthly periods come to a stop together with ovulation. It is estimated that many women start experiencing menopause at about 50 to 55 years of age. For some women, it might start early due to the intake of certain medications such as birth control pills or surgical procedures. The duration of time before menopause fully kicks in, perimenopause period, is marked by extremely short or long monthly periods. This early onset of menopause can be as early as 30 or 40 years of age.

Identifying When you’re in Menopause

The first indicator that confirms you have officially started menopause is the absence of menstruation, consistently for a year. During perimenopause stage, there are various physical changes that you will notice such as hot flashes, trouble staying or falling asleep, heavy bleeding for a prolonged duration of time, extremely long or short menstrual cycles, urinary incontinence, night sweats, dwindled libido, experiencing pain during sexual intercourse and a dry vagina. The menopause symptoms are usually as a result of reduced production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Depression and fatigue are often associated with low levels of estrogen.

Extra Changes Associated with Menopause

Bone loss may be experienced due to the diminished production and circulation of estrogen especially during the initial stages of menopause. If you consult a physician or an OBGYN for menopause consultation, they are likely to conduct a scan to determine the bone density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis. Stroke and heart diseases are also possible risks that can occur due to a decrease in estrogen levels. Once you reach menopause it is essential for you to take healthy diets, exercise regularly and test your cholesterol levels frequently.

Managing Menopause Symptoms

Menopause is an unavoidable stage in the life of every woman but this does not have to inhibit your happiness during this process. Many of the symptoms associated with menopause can be moderated. Sexual discomfort can be soothed to eliminate the discomfort and enhance gratification. OBGYN specialists can create personalized treatments depending on the symptoms of an individual exhibit.

Menopause Treatments

There are a variety of menopause treatment therapies that can be used such as antidepressants, use of vaginal estrogen, clonidine or Gabapentin, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), Bioidentical HRT, administering calcium and vitamin D. The therapy treatment used depends on the symptoms and their severity. HRT is used as a substitute for progestin, estrogen, and progesterone. Bioidentical HRT makes use of HRT extracted from plants that are similar to the hormones in your body. In order to moderate the night sweats or the hot flashes clonidine or gabapentin are prescribed. To relieve fatigue and depression the physician will recommend the use of antidepressants. If you experience vaginal dryness the OBGYN will prescribe the topical creams containing vaginal estrogen. Calcium and vitamin D are essential in maintaining healthy and sufficient bone density.
