Giving Your Car to a Family Member? Five Things to Think About

Ready for a new car? Everyone is in this position at some point. If you’re thinking of passing the used car onto a family member, here are five important steps to consider.

Make sure registration is current.

As with any vehicle, your registration expires every year. It’s important to remember to renew this registration with the state’s office. This way, whoever gets the vehicle next knows when their vehicle registration is due next. Along with this, the registration title must be transferred over to the new driver’s name. Even if you are giving the car to a son or daughter who will be covered under you, you still need to notify your office. It should not remain under your name for insurance and legal purposes.

Make sure it’s safe to drive.

This may seem like a no brainer, but if you’re giving your car to a family member, it’s a good idea to make sure that it’s safe to operate. This includes normal maintenance like oil changes, tire inspections, and brake checks. Although these are some of the more prominent features you maintain on a vehicle, you should also consider the quality of minor things too. Things like making the exterior look nice with some turtle wax, or cleaning up the headlights, fog lights, and tail lights with a headlight restoration kit. It’s simple stuff like this that can improve a car’s appearance.

Get a certificate.

Be sure to get reviewed for a Certificate of Roadworthiness. Roadworthiness is what it sounds like, your car is of worthy quality to drive on public roads. In certain places, this certificate is a mandatory requirement when it is being registered or sold. This site can help you find local places in Victoria which will test for roadworthiness.

Make sure you have a new vehicle.

If you’re looking for a new car, you can look for one at a dealership. You can also check out dealers auto auctions if you want to buy one pre-owned. This is an online marketplace for vehicles. It’s the largest online dealer auction. Note that they only sell pre-owned and used cars. If your plan to give your car to a family member falls through, this is a reasonable route to sell it.

Make sure of insurance changes.

All drivers need car insurance. Insurance must be canceled for the sold vehicle, but you will want to transfer an insurance policy for the new car with comprehensive coverage.

Unplanned events happen more often than expected and insurance helps cut those costs. When searching for insurance, compare your comprehensive car insurance quote at iSelect. They have consultants who will help figure out the best rates for you. Comprehensive coverage covers damage from a variety of weather like thunderstorms and fires. Another covered claim is car crashes. For example, if you get rear-ended at a stoplight, or if you get into a crash. Auto insurers with comprehensive coverage cover other instances too, like theft or scratches on the vehicle. It’s understandable why this is a common coverage type for many drivers.

Keep in mind that rates are dependent on an entire host of factors. One of these is your driving history record. If you get into many accidents and have a poor driving record, it’s likely your costs will be higher than someone who has a clean record. The type of car you own plays into your rate too. If you own a high-class sports car that goes faster than lightspeed, you will be paying more than let’s say, a minivan. with high safety ratings. Age is one of the biggest differences in insurance rates. It is more costly if you’re under 25 years old.

In summary, if it’s time to get rid of your old car, be sure to follow these simple tips. They can make all of the difference for a streamlined selling and buying process, so you will be even closer to being out with the old and in with the new.
