You’re about to announce to the world that you’ve gotten engaged to the one person you love most in the world. You’ve both finally taken that next big step, and you want to scream it from the top of every rooftop that yes, you’re going to spend the rest of your life with the one person in the world who matters most. But because it’s physically impossible to do just that, why not do it with the most beautiful photos that represent just how beautiful you and your future spouse’s love is?
We already put so much time and effort into making sure the photos we put on social media are as close to perfect as possible, even when it’s just a picture of our quinoa salad at the local Instagrammable food spot. But when it comes to the photos that announce your plan to spend the rest of your life with the person you love most, you’re going to want to make sure that the quality and beauty of these photos is top notch. Why? One, it’s a representation of the love between you and your significant other, and two, you’re going to blasts these photos across every social media channel, email, and your wedding invitations and announcements.
Your engagement photos are almost as important as the photos you’ll be taking on the day of your wedding, so why not make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward and taking the best steps toward capturing this wonderful moment? Here are some tips on how to take the best engagement photos, the kind that everyone you know can’t help but go “aww” when they see how in love and what a beautiful couple you two are.
Choose a Backdrop
Any art student or photographer knows that the backdrop in a photo is important to the visual as a whole. Do research on the top places couples go to take their engagement photos. Top places to look for are beaches, botanical gardens, river walks, and more. Nature always makes a great scenery for an engagement photo, because the natural beauty will help add to the natural love evoked between you two in the photos. Play to your strengths and personalities as a couple and choose a scenery that is representative of you both. If your friends and family know you two for the vacations you love to take to Hawaii and going surfboarding, then choosing an engagement session venue with a beautiful lake or ocean view can be a wonderful choice.
Invest in a Professional Photographer
With the endless numbers of costs that are sure to come with the wedding, you’re probably trying to find little shortcuts and pinch pennies where you can. Your engagement photos is not one of those areas you should be doing so. I’m not saying you should sell an arm and a limb to pay for your engagement photos – what I’m advising is to find an affordable photographer who is also a professional to take your photos. You don’t want to look back and regret the quality of the photos that were taken because you decided to go with your best friend’s daughter in high school who “dabbles” in photography. Make sure to vet your professional engagement or wedding photographer by looking at the engagement photos they’ve done of other couples, and decide whether you like the quality and if they’re a good fit for you before you decide to move forward.
Dress
You don’t have to be a model or work in the fashion industry to know that what you wear in your engagement photos matter. But what are the most important factors when it comes to choosing what to wear in your engagement photoshoot?
What many people may not tell you, but we’re going to now, is that it’s important to dress comfortable! No, we don’t mean you should be posing in your Friday movie night lounge t-shirt and a pair of oversized sweatpants. We mean dress like yourselves. When you feel like you, you feel comfortable and at ease, and when you’re calm, the emotion and love between you and your fiancé will be able to shine through in your photos. Don’t be too focused on trying to get the right shot, that’s the job of your photographer.
Just like when taking a family photo, it’s important to coordinate, but that doesn’t mean to match every piece of clothing. Find colors and prints that help complement the other person’s outfit. If your fiancé wants to wear a pair of jeans, perhaps throwing on a cute jean jacket over a solid color dress can be the way to go.
Now That You’re Photo Ready…
The moment you share your photos with your loved ones and close friends, they’ll be in awe of the breathtaking couple before them. Just make sure to follow the two key steps mentioned above to get the best quality out of your engagement photos!
