4 Fun and Essential Accessories Every Dog Parent Needs

August 20, 2021 by Carter Leave a Comment

Are you one of those pet parents who buys every possible accessory for your dog? Do you have all the latest jackets, gear, and innovative toys?

If you’re in Canada, you need to check out Homes Alive Pets for some great deals on dog accessories your dog can’t live without. They stock everything from food and chew toys to clothing and grooming gear.

Regardless of how many accessories you have for your dog, there’s always room for more. While some accessories aren’t anything to write home about, others are essential.

If you’re looking for fun dog accessories, start with these four items.

1. FURminator Products

The original FURminator is like the Terminator for dog fur – it’s the best tool you’ll ever use to de-shed your dog. Regular brushes, and even some standard undercoat brushes, don’t remove enough undercoat to keep your dog from shedding all over your house. Since the FURminator’s teeth are close together, you’ll also remove the dirt from your dog’s fur.

Although most dogs will benefit, regular and thorough de-shedding is essential for service dogs. When you own a service dog, you have to keep your dog clean and prevent shedding in public spaces as much as possible. This helps keep restaurants and other businesses clean and avoids triggering other patrons’ allergies.

In this FURminator review, you can see that after significant use, the brush might start to come apart from the handle. When you get your FURminator, you may want to pull the handle apart intentionally, add a little superglue, and put it back together.

2. An emergency carry harness

Do you have a plan for carrying your dog if it becomes injured or can’t walk for some reason? It’s smart to always carry an emergency carry harness anywhere you go with your dog. If you have a small dog, you might be able to carry him or her when necessary. However, if you have a large dog, you might get stuck somewhere.

An emergency carry harness is designed to support your dog with straps that you wear around your shoulders to carry your dog on your back.

Imagine hiking on a trail with your dog. After about an hour out on the trail, your dog falls on a rock, sprains his or her ankle, and can’t walk. What would you do? You can’t make your dog limp all the way back to the car. You can try to walk your dog like a wheelbarrow if they hurt their back leg, but depending on the trail, that might not be an option.

If you have a big dog, you need an emergency carry harness. Even if you’re just walking around the block, you’ll struggle to carry a big dog back home. You can try using the firefighter’s lift, but it’s not easy.

If you have a small dog, you also need an emergency carry harness. There might be times when you can’t easily carry a small dog in your arms.

3. A lightweight body pet carrier

You’ve seen people carry their babies in wearable slings, and they make them for dogs, too. You probably won’t be able to carry a dog over 12 pounds in one of these slings, but you can always try.

This type of carrier is a good alternative to an emergency carry harness for small dogs. Instead of carrying your dog on your back, you can wear your dog like a human baby in front.

Wearable body slings for pets are easy to use with a little practice. Your dog will probably resist being wrapped up at first, but when the sling is fully in place, they’ll feel more secure.

4. Dog treat puzzles

Treat puzzles are fun for you and your dog. They come in all different styles and difficulty levels ranging from beginner to advanced. This puzzle is a great way to introduce your dog to the concept of treat puzzles. The puzzle is easy and will train your dog to use their paws or nose to push the puzzle pieces out of the way to get to the treat underneath.

Other puzzles are more complex and require sliding multiple tabs around in a specific combination. Some treat puzzles look like hamster balls and release kibble as the dog rolls the ball around.

Your dog deserves the best

Your dog deserves to have the best toys, puzzles, and experiences while they’re with you. Don’t be afraid to splurge on your dog – they deserve to be spoiled.
