How to Keep Your Pet Healthy

November 27, 2020 by Carter Leave a Comment

It is usually difficult to know how your pet is feeling, as they can’t tell us about their problems. It can sometimes be hard to know whether your pet is suffering from pain or a health issue, so it is important to look out for any indicators that may suggest there is a problem. Simple routines can ensure your pet is happy and healthy and enjoys a long life.

1. Regular Checkups

It is a good idea to take your vet in for routine checkups to ensure they are happy and healthy. Examinations are good as a preventative measure as they can make sure that any potential issue is caught as early as possible. This will also ensure it is less expensive in the long-term.

Take your pet for a checkup every one to two years so that your vet can give your pet a physical exam to check their health and condition. This will check your pet’s heart, breathing, ears, skin, and mouth.

Your vet may also recommend additional tests if he/she thinks that they are necessary, but this way you know your pet is well taken care of. Your pet may need to undergo extra tests such as blood tests that help to analyze the function of the liver, kidneys, and blood counts.

It is also a good idea to consider health insurance such as Pumpkin Pet Insurance, to make sure your beloved pet is covered.

2. Dental Health

Dental health is also vitally important to the health and wellbeing of your pet. Over eighty percent of cats and gums over three years of age show signs of oral diseases.

Studies suggest that taking proper care of your pet’s dental health can increase their life expectancy by two to five years. Depending on your individual pet, professional dental cleanings and surgery may be necessary. However there a few things you can do to promote a healthy dental routine.

Start brushing your pet’s teeth every day or weekly. Use a pet toothbrush and toothpaste and get your pet used to this routine. As he becomes used to it, the process will become much easier. Brushing your pet’s teeth at home can help to increase the time necessary between professional cleanings.

3. Healthy Diet

The nutritional needs of your pet will change over their lifetime. A young pet and an elderly pet will require different things so it is important to tailor their diets to suit their individual needs.

The nutritional needs of dogs and cats vary quite a bit, so it is a good idea to speak to a veterinary professional to determine the best food for your individual pet. It is also necessary to keep an eye on portion control and follow the recommended amount based on the weight of your pet.

Some dogs will require different diets depending on medical or health issues, but an average dog should eat a high-quality, high-protein, meat-based diet, with the addition of fiber to aid digestion, essential vitamins and minerals for his immune system, fish oils for healthy skin and coat as well as healthy grains for energy.

Cats are strict carnivores meaning that their food should be made up of a high amount of easily digestible proteins. They also need fats for calories. You may choose to mix wet and dry cat food, but ensure their food contains vitamin A for healthy organ function, essential fats for healthy fur and skin, taurine for and a healthy heart and eyes.

4. Regular Exercise

Daily exercise is also vital in maintaining a healthy weight and ensuring your pet is healthy in general.

To sum up…

It is important to carefully look after your pet by keeping an eye on any changes, taking them for regular check-ups, ensuring they are eating a healthy diet, and getting enough exercise.
