Kitties Get Lost Too: Do You Need a Cat Tag for Your Feline Friend?

December 7, 2020 by Carter Leave a Comment

Just because you have an indoor cat doesn’t mean the risk of them slipping out and getting lost isn’t high. Your animal can’t speak to ask for directions or tell someone who finds them your name and phone number. This is why it’s important to have a cat tag for identification on your kitty!

Why Your Cat Should Have a Cat Tag

Your cat should have a cat tag on them so that if they ever were to make a quick exit, whoever finds him or her can make sure they give you a call to let you know they’ve found Mr. Whiskers.

This is also a good precaution to take in case there is a natural disaster or other emergencies where your cat may run away. This will help you locate your cat fast, and also help a local shelter to locate you in the event they are brought to them.

In some states, a cat tag is enforced by law and can result in a fine should a cat be found without identification. It’s best to look up the bylaws where you live regarding this matter as some states require pet registrations.

Cat Tag vs Microchipping

Can you skip the cat tags if you have a microchip? The best thing to do is have both as the cat tag works as a visible identifier, whereas the microchip serves as a backup identification in case the collar with the tags goes missing or is removed.

Microchipping is a good failsafe to have in place and is also recommended by most veterinarians. Some veterinary clinics may offer microchip clinics where they do the procedure at a reduced cost as well as providing ID tags that identify the cat is a patient of the vet clinic as a means of tracking down the owner.

What Kind of Collar Should I Get?

When it comes to collars for your cat tags, the best options are ones with safety release mechanisms built-in. This means not going for the classic belt buckle style collar, but a clip collar that will open if it is tugged on hard enough.

Often enough, cats can and will get their collars hooked on things and can severely injure the cat if not kill them as they struggle to get loose. The quick-release will prevent this from happening and the microchip will act as the identifying back up to your cat tags.

Your Pets Safety Is Important

Safety is definitely top of mind for all pet owners. This is why getting a cat tag is important to keep your kitty not only safe but also help find her way back home to you. Don’t you want to make sure they get home safe and sound? A cat tag will help with that!
