For pet lovers, you might have gone through the struggle of boundaries with your cute animals. There are places in your house, it can be the bedroom or your favorite couch, where you want to keep your pet off. Here are a few methods to implement:
Have a Pet Fence
If you have a dog as a pet, then you can use a pet fence to restrict its movement. A pet fence will be effective because it will provide a physical block for the dogs. Get an appropriate fence depending on the size of your dog and the space available in your home.
Double Barn Doors for Dogs
Apart from the attractiveness of double barn doors, they can maximize space. They are quick and easy to install and do not need cutting into a door or wall. These types of doors will help contain your dog in a particular area; thus, they cannot go to places they are not allowed in or wander around the house.
Having a Bumpy Flooring
An uneven floor is a rare strategy that makes pets feel uncomfortable when stepping on it. This will deter the cats and dogs from the areas of your home with a bumpy floor. You can create an uneven floor by placing rubber floor mats with several raised patterns. Thus it will prevent the pets from stepping on the mat.
Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement requires you not to hit your pet or use harsh words towards them. Hitting your pet will worsen an already bad situation by making it more afraid of you and jumpy when you are around.
Obedience Training
Train your animal on obedience with basic instructions like sit, come, and stay. Teaching your dog these commands will train it to respect your instructions and understand you are the master. You can hasten up the process by training it using treats and positive rewards. They will understand the difference between right and wrong behaviors. With this obedience training, you can tell your pet to stay in their designated area of sleeping and thus prevent them from messing up your couch.
Have a Particular Command
You can have a specific command like “out” for dogs. Train the dogs to know they need to leave the particular room or place when you are using the command. When they follow the command, they should receive rewards and positive affirmation.
Have an Allocated Space for Them
The allocated space can be a bed, sofa, crate, or cage. Set it up near the area the pets are not allowed to go. An example is if the restricted area is your office, place your pet’s bed near your office where it can see you and feel it is around you.
Remember to be consistent with their allocated space. If a dog is allowed on the couch when there are no guests but not allowed if guests are present, it will be a little bit confusing for the dog to grasp the difference. If you want a place to be a no-pet zone, then it should be a no-pet zone at all times.
External Reinforcement
Find a collar for your dog or cat which can provide a slight static shock when your pet crosses the boundaries that they are not allowed to. The static shock is not severe; therefore, it cannot hurt your pet in any way. Only use this as a last measure if your pet has refused to adapt to the other training methods.
Scent Deterrent
Using a scent deterrent will keep your dog from going to unwanted areas. Certain scents repel dogs like citrus, red pepper, vinegar, and mothballs, and should keep them away. For the areas you don’t want your dog to step in, place a bowl containing any of the above ingredients.
Just like that ice cream or cake in a fridge, some pets can find it a little difficult to resist the temptations of going to rooms and places they are not allowed in your home. However, use the above tips to control your pets and there can be peace and harmony in your home.
