Orlando, Florida, has always been a hotspot for tourist activity, and the industry contributes massively to its local economy. When thinking about Orlando, you might automatically see in your mind’s eyes images of Mickey Mouse and the huge Disneyland park based in the area, or Universal Studios or Aquatica Park. Yes, the area is synonymous with theme parks, and it certainly makes an excellent holiday for families as there is plenty to keep the kids entertained. However, amidst the rush of adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers trying to get first in line for the many famous rollercoasters, other parts of Orlando get lost and overlooked. Although you might want to spend some time enjoying the rides, be sure to pay attention to what else this area has to offer. Here are some alternative spots to visit and some suggestions as to how you can plan the ultimate trip to Orlando in an RV.
Why Choose an Alternative Method of Accommodation
A lot of the theme parks in this area offer vacation packages and put visitors up in one of their hotels on the lot, or other vacation companies include similar deals. This is very tempting for many people as these package deals are usually reasonably priced and take the fuss away from planning your trip yourself. However, if you want to break away from the overcrowded tourism spots or have no interest in these theme parks, it’s best to look at alternative methods of travel and accommodation in the area, such as with an RV. An RV can offer you a sense of adventure. It’s highly recommended that you check out some Orlando RV rental options and visit a few of the campsites in the area. This is a great way to avoid the traditional tourism of Orlando and get a different perspective of the nearby areas. If this is how you think you’d like to spend your trip, read on to find out some great spots to explore and where to camp nearby.
Things to Do:
Tibet Butler Nature Preserve:
This is an excellent spot for those who are seeking the quieter side of busy Orlando. Simply park up your RV and enjoy the tranquility and idyllic nature around you. With plenty of paths and trails to explore through the trees, swamps, and even along the shores of Lake Tibet, you will have a great time. It is ideal for both singles, couples, and families alike, and there are even classes held at the weekends for both parents and kids to enjoy and learn something new. There is a picnic area where you can enjoy some homemade lunch (a perk of having the RV) while you spend your day exploring the area. This beautiful preserve can be found on Winter Garden Vineland Rd, and the nearest campsite is Camper Rental Adventures, only a 15-minute drive away.
Bill Frederick Park and Pool at Turkey Lake:
Another good choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the inner city, this park is a brilliant way to spend a sunny afternoon or day with the family. Again, this park offers pretty pathways the meander around the area, or you could decide to spend your time looking out across the waters of Turkey Lake. The swimming pool is a perfect way to cool off in the heat and is sure to keep the kids happy. You could even enjoy a bit of fishing or bird watching if you’re looking for a more relaxing activity. Luckily, there is a campsite in the park so you could even make it your main spot during your vacation.
Stumpy’s Hatchet House:
If you want to take a break from nature and have some fun, spend some time at Stumpy’s Hatchet house on Palm Parkway. Practice the art of hatchet throwing and see if you can hit your target! This activity is better suited for adults who can enjoy a cold beer while they compete against each other. It’s a great way to blow off some steam or just enjoying the company of good friends. A perfect alternative activity to enjoy in the city of Orlando. The closest campsite is at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.
Split Oak Forest:
Drive a little further out of the city, and you will come to Split Oak Forest. This area covers around 2,000 acres and is home to much wildlife, including beautiful Crane birds. There is an old oak tree that has split in half in the forest, which is why the area got its name. This spot is the ultimate escape from the busy city, and if you’re looking to unwind after exploring the more built-up areas of Orlando, this could be an ideal spot to stay for a few days. Naturally, there is the trail to explore that will take you through the forest, past ponds, and marshes. It is a beautiful place to visit and is highly recommended. The nearest campsite here is the Floridian RV resort, which is only a 4-minute drive away.
Further Afield
If you are going to hire an RV to explore Orlando and its surrounding areas, why not extend your trip and go further afield? Florida has a lot of places to see, so it would be a shame to limit your trip to Orlando alone. If you drive southwest, you could come to the city of Naples, which is a beautiful town and offers golden, sandy beaches to enjoy. Here you could also explore the Everglades National Park, which is a unique and mysterious sight to behold. Hop on an airboat tour and wind in and out of the mangrove trees that create natural tunnels as the stretch up from out of the waters. If you’re lucky, you might even spot an alligator or two – just don’t get too close! There are plenty of other stops along the way and many campsites that you can spend a night or two in to break up the journey.
Orlando is a fantastic city, and the state of Florida is popular as a vacation spot for a good reason. If you would like to try something new and see a different side to the area, consider hiring an RV and give yourself the freedom to move from place to place with ease. It will be a vacation you won’t forget!
