Best Ways to Combat Hyperpigmentation When You’re Always Outdoors

May 31, 2021 by Carter Leave a Comment

When you spend most of your time outdoors, like biking or tending to your garden, there’s a good chance you are exposing your skin to the damaging effects of the sun. One of the most notable effects you may notice is the presence of dark pigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a condition wherein the skin has skin patches that are darker than the usual skin tone. It can have various colors, ranging from black, brown, or gray. The cause of this is the increase in melanin production in the skin.

How do you prevent hyperpigmentation?

When you have these dark skin patches and decide to get rid of them, you must understand that not all hyperpigmentation can resolve since the skin undergoes several changes due to aging, hormones, diet, and even lifestyle. Individuals with darker skin tones would usually have a longer healing time. Here are a few ways you prevent your skin from having these hyperpigmentations when you are out exploring the world:

Exfoliate your skin

One of the best ways to prevent your skin from having hyperpigmentation is to exfoliate at least one to two times a week. Exfoliating can help shed the hyperpigmented cells and accelerate the skin’s healing process. A Cosmelan peel is an effective way of deeply exfoliating your skin, as it has chemical exfoliants that are ideal for reducing hyperpigmentation. In addition, they are also great for resurfacing and brightening your skin’s appearance. When done correctly, it can help even out your skin tone.

Stop skin inflammation

Whenever possible, you should stay away from products that cause inflammation on your skin. There are numerous skin and beauty products on the market, and it can be overwhelming to choose just one. However, it would really be good for your skin if you can take the time to look at the product’s ingredients and analyze whether any of them can cause skin damage or inflammation. Any harsh chemicals should be avoided. Look for products that help fight inflammation and offer protection from sun damage.

Protect your skin from the sun

Going outdoors is fun, but you must not forget about protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays. Make sure to wear a hat and apply sunscreen. Ideally, your SPF protection should be high during the summer. When choosing a sunscreen, don’t forget to check the label to know what type works best for your skin. Whenever possible, go out when the sun is not too bright. Remember, hyperpigmentation can easily spread on your skin when you constantly expose it to an irritant.

Use skin brightening products

Another way to reduce hyperpigmentation is to stop the increased production of melanin on your skin. You can accomplish this by using skin brightening products. When you contrast the melanin production and force your skin to produce lesser pigmentations, you effectively remove these dark spots. Some of the products that can help brighten your skin are:

  • Alpha arbutin
  • Azelaic acid
  • Kojic acid
  • Niacinamide
  • Vitamin C

Take note these will only work temporarily to restore the balance of the skin tone and brighten dark spots. The success of your skin brightening journey relies on how committed you are to practice these tips. You also have to understand the process differs from one person to the other, so you have to be patient if your skin does not clear up as fast as your peers.
