7 Things to Do Before You Bring a New Puppy Home

July 11, 2022 by Carter Leave a Comment

Bringing a new puppy home is exhilarating, especially for first-time pet parents. However, adequate preparation is essential for this happy addition to the family to be worthwhile. Here are seven things to do before you bring a new puppy home.

Familiarize with your puppy’s breed needs

Different dog breeds have varied needs, and it is important to know what to expect once you get your puppy. Do not ignore anything right from the breed-specific behavior and common health conditions to nutritional requirements. This will make it easier for you to know critical elements such as how often to feed a puppy, how much exercise the puppy needs, and the expected growth rate.

Puppy-proof your home

As a pet parent, creating a safe environment for your puppy to feel comfortable and cared for is necessary. Typically, this involves checking for potential hazards, keeping your puppy out of unwanted areas, and settling for a room that will be the center of activities when your puppy is indoors. Remember to also clearly define your puppy’s eating and sleeping areas.

Buy puppy essentials and toys

One of the most exciting parts of preparing for a new puppy is buying the essentials and toys. With the pet market rapidly growing, it is crucial to have a budget and stick to buying must-haves and fun dog accessories such as:

  • Puppy crate
  • Food and water bowls
  • A few play and chew toys
  • Collar, leash, and ID tags
  • Puppy bags and poo bags

Learn the State and local animal care and control regulations

Animal laws and ordinances vary from region to region, and it is vital to be aware of the acceptable practices within your state and locality. Doing this will help prevent unnecessary complications or trouble with the law once your puppy is home.

Find a good vet and trainer

Take time to find a good local vet and trainer for your puppy, as you will need their services for a healthy and well-behaved pet. The earlier you find these professionals, the better, as you can start arranging for sessions and not wait until you are facing a problem.

Prepare for a new schedule

Your puppy will need attention and good care, which translates to hours of spending time with your new family member. As such, you should plan for a significant interruption of your regular schedules, especially for the first few weeks after bringing your puppy home.

Talk with your family

Before bringing a puppy home, ensure you talk with your family and set ground rules on what is expected. Introducing children to a family pet will take more than a single discussion and best involves regular guidance and monitoring for responsible behavior.

Never ignore the importance of having a conversation with your family, even when you live with teenagers or older adults, as proper pet care is best achieved when everyone chips in.

Endnote

Choosing to bring a new puppy home is always a big decision that is best actualized through good planning and learning to be a patient and keen pet parent.
